Arguably the most delicious part of wedding planning, getting to eat cake is definitely an engagement perk! Today we’re featuring Heidi Allison from Sugar Bee Sweets talking about the importance of hiring a professional baker for your wedding.

Tell me a little about yourself! How did you get started in the wedding industry? Why do you love it so much?
I have always loved weddings! In the past, I worked at a bridal salon, a paper and invitation place as well as a corporate venue space. I love all details of wedding planning, so once I started my own cake business, making the jump to doing wedding cakes was a no-brainer!

If you could design a cake around any wedding theme, what would it be?
Hmmmm, I love so many wedding themes. If I had my way I would have had 7 different weddings all with a different look & feel. I don’t have a favorite, I just love when a bride is excited about the look & feel of her wedding and wants her cake to represent that….ultimately those are my favorite wedding cake designs.

Why do you think hiring a professional vs. a friend or relative that can bake is so important for couples?
Hiring a professional gives you a more comfortable platform to communicate on and to feel like you can be honest in your expectations. You also know that they are reliable due to their business background & reviews versus someone that is “doing you a favor.”

A lot more brides are going the dessert bar route instead of just having a bridal cake, what are the trends you’re loving?
I LOVE this trend! It is such a fun idea for a wedding and the guests absolutely love all of the options! This is a great way for the couple to really incorporate their tastes into more than just the wedding cake flavor/design and pick desserts that are aesthetically pleasing, taste great, and represent them as a couple!

How can a baker fit into any wedding budget?
Being upfront about your budget and what you like is always a good start! A lot of times brides assume their budget is too small or that they can’t have what they want and my advice is to communicate what you want to your baker and let them price it out for you. Typically the brides are pleasantly surprised that what they want is within their budget! And if it’s not there are always changes that can be made, you just have to be open to ideas if you have a tight or strict budget.

Anything else you want couples to know? Any advice for the newly engaged?
Have fun throughout the process, if you aren’t having fun at your appointment it could be the wedding stress but it could also be who you are working with. Always remember that there are enough professionals out there that you should definitely enjoy who you are working with!

Thank you for the awesome advice, Heidi! You are such a joy to work with and you make some of the yummiest cakes in town!
